Geeta Phogat’s Real Life Coach Is Really Pissed With Dangal And We’re Not Surprised Why
In fact, the film that claimed to be “based on an incredible true story” went on to show that Geeta Phogat’s coach had Mahavir Singh Phogat locked in a room during her final match at the Commonwealth Games, 2010.
So how true were these events? Was Miss Phogat’s national coach really a man with such low ethics?
“Dangal would make people believe that how low a person had stooped to fulfill his own deeds. It’s baseless, whatever shown in the film is not true. I have not seen the film yet, but the facts told to me by my students highlight things that I didn’t do,” said the 70-year-old PR Sondhi who had originally coached Geeta Phogat.
Played by Marathi actor Girish Kulkarni, the character of Geeta’s coach was portrayed as someone who didn’t care much about bringing a gold medal for the country and a particular dialogue in the film even hinted that the coach had stopped believing in Geeta, demotivating her at several levels.
So was this the reality?
Well, no. Says PR Sondhi, “Mahavirji is an old friend. Nothing like that happened during the Delhi Commonwealth Games as shown in the film. Geeta won Gold in my coaching and Babita bagged silver. But I still don’t understand why I was portrayed in such a negative manner in the film.”
“Just to spice things up you can’t defame me. I know the name isn’t the same, but it’s quite evident that I am the person being referred to here,” he argued. The man feels that the makers have not done justice to the coach’s role and portrayed him as the villain in Geeta’s life.
Mr. Sondhi is now planning to contact Aamir Khan regarding the issue and wants him to justify the negative portrayal of the coach in the film. “I don’t want anything but I want to make Aamir Khan realise that if he is giving a coach’s role to somebody, he should have spoken to me before the movie was made.”
Reacting to how Phogat’s okayed to such portrayal of his character in the film, Mr. Sondhi said, “I treated Geeta as my own daughter. I am shocked that the no one from the Phogat family protested against the treatment given to my character. I have decided to cut all ties with them for the good.”
Well, no. Bollywood, playing with someone’s image and hard work just to add ‘drama’ in the film is definitely not appreciated!
